Brrrrr Berlin, Germany, day two

We awoke to a typical Berlin day; cold and rainy. Max temp of 14… bit of a shock to the system after barely having weather under 24 for the past month. Anyway, we decided to have a wander. We headed to a train station to pick up our Berlin Welcome Card booklet and map. We then headed for Boxhagener Platz, a ‘cool’ suburb as Esko calls it. They had a market on so we wandered around there before settling in a cafĂ© for the afternoon to escape the rain. A few hot chocolates and some lunch later we found our way home. There are two main train systems in Berlin; the U Bahn and the S Bahn. For the first time in history, the S Bahn is not running at all. This is due to neglegence; first the wheels, now the brakes. This makes travel a bit tricky for Berliners as over 2 million people would normally take the S Bahn everyday! It even kept running regularly while the war was being fought on the streets of Berlin.

Later that evening we headed into town for dinner. I tried the specialty which was boiled meat, served two ways. They brought the soup out in a pan, served it and left it at the table. I re-filled my bowl and noticed there was some meat in the bottom. I ate it up with the soup. Little did I know, the meat was meant to make up part of the second meal… oops! LuckIly, there was more meat in the pan which I hadn’t noticed which they then served with some yummy cabbage and potato. That could have been very embarrasing!

On the way home we got a text from Esko saying he was heading out to the airport to pick up my cousin Martine! What a suprise, as we weren’t expecting her to be able to make it home! After a big catch up and lots of laughs we finally headed to bed! :)
