Rome, Italy, day 3

After not achieving much from our early start yesterday, we took things a little slower this morning. We slowly walked our way down to the Roman Forums. It’s hard to comprehend just how long the ruins have been there for. It was great to see teams of archeologists picking and brushing away on the ground. A bit of imagination goes a long way to reconstructing all the old buildings and roads. You just have to picture the tourists in togas!

We started at the Coleseum (the MCG of old Rome). Italy has no concept of making lines so we had to push and shove with the other hot and bothered tourists. Anyway, once inside it was amazing! You can really imagine what it would have been like with the fights going on in there. They have restored a small section of a stand with marble to help imagine what it was like as it became a quarry for St Peter’s and other places once it wasn’t in use anymore. This was definently one of the highlights of Rome for me. We then made our way to the rest of the Roman Forums. It was bits and pieces left from buildings, and some amazingly huge collumns stil standing. We particularly enjoyed looking in at the massive old senate building.

After a busy morning in the heat, it was time for lunch. Pizza and rosé. The pizzas here have not dissapointed, all being delicious! I tried a marinara one today.

After lunch we headed to Monumento a Vittoria Emanuele II. It’s a huge building with lovely marble stairs and some great statues and views over the city.

We were very hot and bothered by this stage and Simon had a continuous stream of sweat pouring of him but he really wanted to see ‘The Mouth of Truth’ from the movie Roman Holiday which was nearby. We still have our hands intact, phew! It was a long, hot walk home but we pushed on and got some yummy slushies on the way. Our feet are very well travelled! Simon thinks mine are just plain gross with blisters and grot all over at the end of the day. They’re fine, it’s all part of the adventure!

Dinner consisted of pasta and more rosé. It’s a hard life for us.. haha. We have renamed Italy: Carb land. I don’t think we’ve even eaten so many carbohydrates! After our delicious dinner we headed back to the Trevi fountain and threw some coins in for luck. It’s such a beautiful fountain… loved it, so we visited it every day or night. We also loved a gelato shop in the vicinity! Simon claims it’s the best ice-cream he’s EVER had! His favourite was the whisky and I liked the honey. Although the chocolate and peach flavours were good too… Not that we went there much.. hehe :)

Finished our last night in Rome with a drink at a lovely old wine bar near our hotel. We’ve really enjoyed Rome and hope to come back to explore more one day. I didn’t even get time to go shopping!! Katie xo
