San Sebastian, Spain, Day 1
We were sad to say adiós to Barcelona after a great couple of days there. Would be good to go back after August so more places are open. We found all tapas bars that were recommended, were closed in August. Guess they do that to avoid us tourists!
Today we had a short flight from Barcelona to Bilbao. We figured we’d find a bus from there to San Sebastian. It couldn’t have been easier… there was a bus every hour to San Sebastian from the airport. So we got on the first one and took off! The scenery was great, lots of hills and villages in valleys. The Pyrenees is an adventure for another time though!
The sun was shining brightly when we arrived in San Sebastian. We made our way to our hotel on foot through the town. It’s much bigger than I thought it would be. Our hotel room looks out over the main beach, Playa de la Concha. Very nice! It didn’t take me long to be dressed and ready for the beach! I think Simon and I may have been the whitest people on the beach but you have to start somewhere!
Simon didn’t last long so went for a stroll to get some sandwiches. Being siesta time, lots of places were closed so he didn’t return for over an hour. Meanwhile, I was pretty much cooked by this stage, my skin’s not used to seeing sun yet! All up, we’d had a couple of hours in the sun so we’d well and truly toasted.
In the evening we wandered the old town. There is only one orininal street remaining after the town burned in a siege in 1813. The old town has a church, cathedral and basilica tucked amoungst the houses and shops which Simon enjoyed seeing.
After a few beers in the sun we had a quick bite to eat. We got pizza. It’s always interesting not really knowing what you’re going to get… I just give it a go… it’s all part of the adventure… and usually it’s delicious anyway! K. xo
