Our last day in Barcelona
Hola! Rain was forecast for Barcelona but we woke to a perfectly clear day- just gorgeous! After a breakfast of bread, ham, cheese and pastries we headed down to Parc Monjuïc. We had a wander through the Olympic stadium before catching a cable car to Monjuïc castle. The view of the city and coast from the cable car were brilliant! The castle also had great views of the city and coast, as well as original cannons fron the 1700s. From the castle, which is on a huge hill, we wandered down by foot to another cable car which took us across the port to Barceloneta beach. There, thousands of seriously tanned people covered the beach. Not many people swimming… baking is the thing to do in Barcelona! At this point we decided that Simon was the 3rd whitest person in Barcelona… he he.
The water was warm but oh so nice on our tired and blistered feet. We strolled along the beach, feet in the water for a while before stopping at one of the many seaside restaurants. It was so nice just sitting there soaking up the Spanish sun! We ordered a delicious Seafood paella and some Spanish rosé. We were pretty much set at this stage but a siesta awaited us so we headed back to our wonderful hotel. The metro train system in Barcelona is so so efficient and just great in general. Such a treat after dealing with Connex in Melbourne! The longest you wait for a train is 5 mins and there are stations everywhere. My 2 day pass was worn out after the 2 days. We certainly made good use of it!!!
Our hotel was close to a couple of metro stations which was very convenient. Our room was very spacious and best of all, air conditioned, which was exactly what we needed after a day in the heat. After siesta we headed down to our hotel bar for some cocktails. The bar is situated in an alley which is a great way to watch what’s going on around us without actually sitting on the main streets.
Oh and I’m really proud of our efforts to speak Spanish! We always attempt in Spanish, with help from the guidebook of course. Sometimes we get a reply in English straight away which is a bit rough but sometimes, like today, we ask if they can speak English and get a ‘no’ then the phrasebook gets a REAL work out! All fun and games! Simon thinks my Spanish accent is too happy sounding. I think thats a good thing though! So our time in Barcelona has ended. We certainly loved many things about this wonderful city and hope to return one day! Adiós… Katie xo
